Reported by: WROC-TV Friday, Apr 18, 2008 @10:45am EDT (GREECE) - A state comproller's audit released Friday has the details of $2.5 million in overspending by previous administrators. First, the audit said $300,000 in extra compensation was paid to outgoing adminstrators. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said that district officials failed to monitor a $120 million capital project, which included renovations to 20 schools. The $2.5 million is made up of cost-overruns from the project. The audit blames vague contract language for leading to a $1 million overrun, when the project manager was overpaid by 25%. One of the most egregious findings - the district paid $267,000 for musical risers and six wheelchair lifts that were never used, and now cost $2,640 a year to store. $175,000 in vacation payouts went to 19 employees that left the district. $50,000 went to the former superintendent, Steven Walts, who was in charge of the district during the time when this overspending occurred. DiNapoli says that current school board members and school officials have "committed to fixing the past problems and are working to restore the taxpayers' trust." |
