One Webster man is pounding the pavement to help cut costs for homeowners. Right now, the average Webster homeowner pays around $305 a year for the Webster Police patrol. But, they also pay additional money for the Monroe County Sheriff's Patrol in their county taxes.
Gerry Moldenhauer and his wife Shirley have lived in Webster for almost 50 years. Gary, who’s retired, spends his time researching how much taxpayers in Webster pay for police protection. "I'm not advocating we remove policing from Webster. Far from it. I'm just advocating we place it with a more economic way of doing it," said Moldenhauer.
Gerry says it's unnecessary the town gets protection from the county sheriff's road patrol and a town police force. Gerry is trying to get a referendum on a town ballot giving voters a chance to say if the police department in needed. He says it's far too expensive with the state of the economy. "Every industry has had to look at ways of staying viable in the marketplace. You have to look at other ways of performing services," said Moldenhauer.
Gerry is putting together a petition for residents in Webster to sign. He's looking for at least 800 signatures. To get the word out, he's launched a website www.apow.org called Affordable Policing of Webster. The website has a lot of crime statistics on it, as well as projected costs.
Webster Town Supervisor Ron Nesbitt says he doesn't agree with Moldenhauer. He says the town police department is a hundred percent needed. But he's also trying to save Webster taxpayers big money. Nesbitt has formed a committee that's looking into double taxation. He's trying to get a rebate from the county for Sheriff's Road Patrol Services they pay for and don't end up using.
