Reported by: Jason Frazer Sunday, Nov 29, 2009 @06:27pm EST "I know its been difficult for him. I know something like this is difficult for him," says Gary Rahn.
Who is Merritt Rahn? It depends on who you ask. Prosecutors say rahn's behind a police coverup involving former officer Nick Joseph. In a separate incident, Rahn allegedly forged the background check of former Greece cop Gary Pignato. Thats why he's facing multiple felony charges. But Rahn's lawyer John Parrinello says the charges are bogus. "All these charges are are a rehash of Gary Pignato, Nick Joseph and a 1999 gun incident where he lost or his gun was stolen." But if you ask Rahn's supporters, you get a different idea of who Rahn is. "I think he is a scapegoat for a much bigger political problem in this city," says Barb Fermoil. And it seems that she isnt alone. Today about a hundred family members and friends threw Greece's former top cop a fundraiser at the Italian American Sports Club in Gates. At $25 a pop, the goal was simple - to show Rahn he's still got community support. "He told me from day one, he says Ronnie, I have done nothing wrong. I can go to my grave with a clear conscience and thats the way it is. And thats my brother and i believe him," says Ronald Rahn. Rahn was also in attendance. But declined an on camera interview. He told us off camera that the fundraiser wasnt his idea. But in fact a family member's. "I just feel like this is my way of helping him defend himself against the charges," says Rahn. Sources tell News 8 that all of the money received here today will be used to help cover Merritt Rahn's legal costs. While he has yet to receive the full bill, its estimated to be more than $20,000. "I wouldnt be here supporting him if I had any doubts about his actions. He has done nothing wrong," says Jim Vazzana. Rahn is facing 12 criminal charges--nine of which are felonies. The town of Greece suspended Rahn last April and after making a deal with the town, he resigned as Chief in October. Supervisor John Auberger declined comment. |
