Reported by: amerks.com Saturday, Nov 14, 2009 @11:03pm EST On Thursday, the Rochester Americans had their 11-game win streak ended by the Portland Pirates. Tonight, they were the ones ending a streak. Coming off the record-preventing loss, the Amerks brought the Grand Rapids Griffins’ nine-game win streak to an end tonight. The win improves the Amerks to a league best 27 points (13-2-1-0) and drops the Griffins to 10-5-0-0 (20 points). Rochester has now won 12 of its last 13 games.
Jamie Johnson led the Amerks with a goal and two assists, having a part in each of the Amerks’ three goals. Defenseman Matt Duffy and winger Jeff Taffe both picked up two points in the game, with Duffy getting a goal and assist and Taffe recording two assists. In the second period, Johnson broke through the Griffin defense to push a shot past Griffin goalie Thomas McCollum. Johnson’s goal would prove to be the game-winner for Rochester, coming on a power play from Mike York and Duffy. The center then tallied his second assist of the night when he, and Taffe, helped Jordan Henry add the Amerks’ third goal. Duffy scored his first goal as an Amerk at the 13:24 mark of the first period. The power-play goal came from Taffe and Johnson. With his second straight three-point game, Johnson now leads the team with 16 points and is tied for the team lead in goals. Duffy has now recorded his first two points with Rochester after last playing with the team in the home opener on October 3rd. Logan Pyett ended Alexander Salak’s bid for the shutout when he rocketed a shot under the crossbar and past the Rochester netminder with 42 seconds remaining in the game. Salak finished with 33 saves in the win, improving to 10-1-0, while Grand Rapids goaltender McCollom ended with 17. The Rochester Americans return to action on Friday, November 20th against the Syracuse Crunch at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be the fifth of 10 scheduled meetings between the longtime rivals this season. |
