Top Army brass have been making the rounds at Fort Hood, Texas after this week's deadly shooting rampage there. The death toll is now 13 with 30 others injured. The alleged gunman, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was shot and wounded by a Fort Hood police officer. Army Secretary John McHugh and other top Army officials have been meeting with families of the fallen and visiting with some of those who were injured. McHugh praised those who put themselves at risk to help others at the height of the crisis. General George Casey, the Army chief of staff, described the tragedy as a "kick in the gut." Casey and McHugh sidestepped questions about whether the Army is undermanned and overstressed. In terms of force protection at U.S. military bases, Casey said the Army will study what happened at Fort Hood, learn and adapt. |
