Reported by: Katrina Irwin Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @07:39am EST It's a green future for some middle school students in the Rochester City School District. They're taking part in a program that teaches young girls the science behind going green
About 65 middle school girls from three different schools in the rochester district, are solving different environmental problems.
This group is trying to figure out which fruits produce the most ethanol. It's an alternative fuel that can replace gasoline to power cars. "We're producing ethanol with fruits yeast and water basically we mix it all together and trying it with different fruits," says Martinez. Masters students at the U of R's Warner School of Education are the teachers in this after school program. They hope the students take these lessons out of the classroom too. LaToya Dunbar, a Masters Student at the Warner School says, "they make comments, oh i don't do that, they get that's important but i think that they get over time they are seeing it." 9th grader, Astrad Coffie says, "it helps me learn about what i learn and live in environment and i can pair those things together so I can have my grades right." |
