Reported by: Katrina Irwin Thursday, Oct 29, 2009 @04:34pm EDT Sara Thomas goes the extra mile, with every piece of jewelry she makes. "When I need something I always try to find a recycled version or something that is already used that I can upcycle or reclaim the materials. That way I know that I'm doing what's better. Sometimes you can't find things, but I always try first," says Thomas.
She makes earrings, necklaces, and rings from recycled silver, beads, and even buttons. It's a challenge sometimes, but she says it's worth it. "Doing things green style and always trying to be earth friendly is something that is really important to me, and my husband actually, and our whole lifestyle revolves around just doing our part."She melts down pieces of scrap metal and silver and molds it into new shapes. She also invents new uses for old items. "You can find all kinds of neat vintage things that have been around for a while so that way you're not buying new things that have a carbon impact," she adds. As word gets out, her business is expanding. She says customers like knowing their purchase is also an investment in the environment. Plus, each piece is different.
