Reported by: Lauren MacDonough Wednesday, Oct 28, 2009 @01:07pm EDT Facebook is all about making connections. From old friends or people in your community to people in different states and countries. Facebook is hoping those connections can point the way toward peace.
There are more than 300 million Facebook users and more than 70% are from outside the United States. With so many diverse users, Facebook is signing up for an online peace experiment. Facebook's keeping track of who's connecting with who, especially people from groups who historically don't get along; Israelis and Palestinians, conservatives and liberals, Christians and Atheists. The numbers update daily and every line in the graph trends upwards - a good sign for peace so far. Facebook also asks "Is world peace possible?" Right now only about 8% of Americans polled say it's possible. Compare than to 35% of Colombians polled who say world peace is in the cards. This is all part of a larger online movement called Peace Dot . |
