Reported by: Lauren MacDonough Tuesday, Oct 20, 2009 @11:17pm EDT The Palmyra Police Chief is out of the race for Wayne County Sheriff according the Times of Wayne County.
David Dalton, running as an independent, made the announcement Tuesday night at a candidate meet and greet. Dalton said he received a letter from the federal government saying his actions are in violation of the Federal Hatch Act. Here's why. The Palmyra Police Department has received some federal grant money. It's against federal law to run for political office if you work in a government job that uses federal grant money. Dalton chose to bow out of the race. He's throwing his support to the Democratic candidate, Terry Pickett. Republican Barry Virts is running against Pickett. Virts received the same letter from the federal government saying he's in violation of the Hatch Act. Virts was Chief Deputy of the Wayne County Jail. He chose to resign from his job to continue to run for Wayne County Sheriff. Election day is 2 weeks away. |
