Reported by: WROC-TV Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 @11:30am EDT New York hospitals returned good results in a national study of mortality rates and quality of care.
The Colorado-based HealthGrades Inc. said patients have a 51.5% lower risk of dying in a top-rated hospital than in U.S. hospitals in general.
The conclusion was based on the evaluation of mortality rates stemming from 17 procedures and diagnoses at 5,000 non-federal U.S. hospitals using 40 million Medicare hospitalization records between 2006 and 2008. The Empire State did not have a single hospital on the organization's list of America's 50 Best Hospitals. New York posted its best marks in cardiac surgery, coronary interventional procedures, with a five-star rating . 4.88% of New York hospitals received five-star ratings, compared to 15-percent nationally.
