Reported by: Lauren MacDonough Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 @02:20pm EDT You'd think you'd need a clean background to buy a gun at a gun show. But a loophole in federal law doesn't force private gun sellers to run background checks. So NYC's mayor launched an investigation and a website.
Example: Investigator (undercover): "So no background check?" Seller: "Just show me that you're from Ohio." Investigator (undercover): "That's good about the background check cause I probably couldn't pass one." Investigators tried that trick 30 times at 7 gun shows in 3 states and walked out with a gun 19 times. It's illegal for a dealer to sell a gun if they believe that buyer won't pass a background check. But according to the sting's website, Gun Show: Undercover, sellers don't actually need to do a background check. All they need is a gut feeling. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says, "These videos make it impossible to deny the problem and so we'll send a copy along with a detailed report of our findings to every member of the United States congress as well as to the justice department." Mayor Bloomberg believes that most gun show dealers go by the book. But he wants Congress to pass federal legislation to close the loophole. "We have no interest in shutting down gun shows, we just want to make them safe." |
