Reported by: WROC-TV Tuesday, Aug 18, 2009 @07:19pm EDT Up to 60,000 people have canceled their memberships in AARP because of the group's position on health care reform.
CBS News reports many have switched to the American Seniors Association, a group that positions itself as a conservative alternative to the better-known and far larger group. The American Seniors Association leaves no doubt it is opposed to President Obama's healthcare reform plans that have suggested $313 billion dollars in cuts to medicare programs over ten years. While the AARP claims it hasn't endorsed any healthcare plan, President Obama told a town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, last week, quote, "We have the AARP on board." Under hostile questioning by AARP members at a gathering in Dallas this month, an AARP representative unplugged her microphone and left the room. A YouTube video of that meeting has been viewed nearly a quarter of a million times. AARP claims 40 million members. |
