Reported by: WROC-TV Wednesday, Aug 5, 2009 @04:44pm EDT A new study reveals what may be an early indicator for risk of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers at Kaiser Permanente and a university in Finland have learned elevated cholesterol levels in midlife may be signs of the disorders. Scientists say even borderline elevated cholesterol levels can be indicators as well. The study was carried out on persons between the ages of 40 to 45. The participants were followed for four decades to track midlife cholesterol levels and dementia in late-life. One of the researchers involved in the study called the findings disturbing, noting that 100-million Americans have high or borderline cholesterol levels. Scientists say their findings in the study will pave the way for modifying and managing early risk factors for dementia by lowering cholesterol through lifestyle changes. |
