Reported by: Katrina Irwin Thursday, Jul 16, 2009 @10:07am EDT The Rochester Home Builder's Association's Homearama is going on this week in Victor. For the past couple of years, builder's have been showing off, not only their homes, but also their focus on the environment.
This year, the show has a unique addition. You might say a piece of this show, has gone to the dogs. Part of this year's show is a dog house display. They're being auctioned off to benefit Lollypop Farm. There's one house in particular, that really stands out. It's not just a dog's best friend. It has features for man too! "We think they've been so creative in putting this dog house together, it actually works as a generator for your house if the electricity goes out through solar power," says Adrienne McHargue from Lollypop Farm. Richard Gammell is the brains behind this dog house/solar generator. "She wanted to know if we would donate a dog house and have it auctioned off. I said yeah, we'll do that and then I thought why not put solar panels on it and why not make it work for something," he says. The dog house provides enough energy to help power the tools that built some of the homes here. Gammell adds, "you're taking the energy from the sun and the panels are absorbing it and throwing it in to a charge controller." From there the power gets stored in a battery pack. So, whoever gets the winning bid on these doggie digs, will also, get a back up generator for their home. "Let's say the power goes out, and your watching the 6:00 news on Channel 8 and all of a sudden your power is gone. Well, if you went out turned your inverter on, plugged TV into inverter, you could still watch it," says Gammell.
