  • Go Green: Greenseed

    Thursday, Jun 25, 2009 @11:35am EDT

As the school year comes to an end and lockers and desks are cleaned out, a lot of waste is generated.

"I was working as a teacher and I saw kids throwing away stuff that could be used and I was picking through it and thought there has got to be a better way," says Mitchell Nellis, Founder of Greenseed Educational Supplies.

He believes that one student's trash is another's treasure.  "I saw kids coming to school the next year without stuff without school supplies and I figured why not collect the dots and it came from there," says Nellis.

That's why he started up Greenseed Educational Supplies. It takes the leftovers from one school year and gives them to kids who can't afford new supplies next year.

Nellis adds, "I get everything you wouldn't believe. Writing utensils, markers, all the way up to three ring binders, folders, everything it's amazing."

On Wednesday they were sorting through it all.  Students from the International Baccalaureate program at Eastridge High are pitching in.

"Tons of boxes have come in from different schools and we've been cleaning them up. Making sure there's no names on them and crossing them off and making sure all the stuff is good," says Eastridge Sophomore Sienna McDonald.

They say it feels good to help pay it forward.
"It's a lot of stuff that can help people who really need it," says fellow sophomore Elizabeth Dengal.

This is the fifth year that greenseed has been around and each year it gets bigger and bigger.
"We started with one school, then it went to five now it's up to 34," says Nellis.

He believes this is one green project that will continue to grow.
"I think about half is donated because kids want to help other kids. The other half might have been thrown away so we're keeping it out of the landfill and giving it to kids who can use it."

Right now students in about a dozen classrooms recieve the donated supplies. If you want to learn more about the project or get involved click here.
