Reported by: WROC-TV Wednesday, May 13, 2009 @07:57am EDT Just about every idea you can imagine to keep kids fit was in this room today.
"What we've chose to do is renovate our cafeteria at Manor School," said Kathy Palmer, the food service director at Honeoye Falls-Lima. "This is Dance, Dance, Revolution and we have it at Community Place," said life coach Raquel Thompson. The Greater Rochester Health Foundation sponsored this fair. The idea? Get more people involved around our area in getting kids fit. The foundation has spent the last year giving out grants to local groups with creative ideas to getting kids to think and act in healthy ways. "What this is is our opportunity to show the community how the Foundation is using its assets, and that we think there are a number of things that we are doing which will over time help the health status of our community," said John Urban, the president and CEO of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. The ideas are clever. Rochester Recreation has come up with a roll the dice game where you roll one of the dice and it tell you what to do, like a sit up for example, and the other tells you how many times to do it. Others took a different approach, like remodeling a lunchroom at Honeoye Falls-Lima. "We've seen that the participation rate in the schools has increased dramatically," said Palmer. "I just think that for the kids, it's just a fun place to be right now." Dance Dance Revolution has become one of the most popular games at Rochester's community place. The best part about it, as with most of the ideas presented, is that it's not expensive. "They do break a sweat every time, and they don't even realize that they're working out," said Thompson. |
