Reported by: Elizabeth Harness Wednesday, Feb 18, 2009 @04:26pm EST "This break they're here everyday, we had over 3000 people checked in on the last two days," says Stephen Murphy of the Eastside YMCA in Penfield. Murphy says the YMCA can be the right atmosphere for getting your children and yourself off the couch during the winter lull. "There's times when we get kids connected and then our next job is getting parents perhaps the first time out in awhile they've had for themselves." Rather than sitting in front of the television or computer, Murphy says winter break can be the best time to start a new activity, whether it's learning to swim or shooting some hoops. "And that's where the Y really comes together for the family. Because there are activities they can do together." An environment like the YMCA is also a good place to test out a new Spring sport before parents have to commit to it when children return to school. "It's a good time to set up some good habits so that when Spring comes, when Summer comes, they're more inclined to choose activities both here and outside." If they do find a sport they like, make sure to ask kids the right questions to assure they're ready for it when they return to school. "What do you see yourself staying connected with and what do you see you and your friends doing long-term. What do you like, what do you hate?" says Murphy. The YMCA is open to everyone regardless of ability to pay. They are already signing up families for spring programs and booking for summer camps.
