Reported by: Ali Touhey Wednesday, Oct 28, 2009 @06:40pm EDT Dr. Edward Lewis, a pediatrician for the last 28 years, knows that Halloween is more about the treats than the tricks.
"Halloween is all about candy," said Dr. Lewis. He said avoiding a sugar overload can happen before your child even steps foot out the house on Halloween. Lewis recommends having a special holiday themed dinner. "If the kids eat spooky food for dinner, they aren't going to be quite as hungry when they come back with their candy. " That candy should be eaten in moderation once kids have it in their grasp. Lewis says limit consumption to several pieces a day or at least use your best judgment. If you're worried that too much candy may be a problem, Lewis says there is a solution. He recommends handing out healthier snacks like trail mix or raisins. He does caution, these snacks might have trick-or-treaters saying thanks, but no thanks. "Those are the candies or the treats that are going to be moved into the bag of 'I don't want.' Halloween is about candy so you just have to be careful and be sensible," said Dr. Lewis. |
